For most installations, CasaTunes can use DHCP to automatically obtain an IP address from the network. However, when integrating a CasaTunes Music Server with an automation or control system, configuring a static IP address is recommended.
This is especially important for control systems that connect to CasaTunes using a configured IP address rather than dynamically discovering the CasaTunes Music Server on the network.
When DHCP is enabled, the network router or DHCP server assigns an IP address to the CasaTunes Music Server. Although the address will often remain the same, it may change following a restart of the CasaTunes Music Server, router, switch, or other network equipment.
If an automation or control system has been configured to connect to CasaTunes using the previous IP address, communication with the CasaTunes Music Server may be lost. The automation system would then need to be reconfigured with the server's new IP address.
Whenever possible, CasaTunes recommends reserving an IP address for the Music Server using the network's DHCP server rather than configuring a static IP address directly on the Music Server. A DHCP reservation allows the network to manage the IP configuration while ensuring that the CasaTunes Music Server is consistently assigned the same IP address. If you do not have access to the router, DHCP server, or other network equipment required to create a DHCP reservation, CasaTunes provides the option to configure a static IP address directly on the Music Server using the CasaTunesX App.

When you configure a static IP address for the first time, CasaTunesX automatically initializes the fields using the Music Server's current network configuration. This makes it easier to preserve the existing network settings while assigning the server a permanent address.
Before applying the settings, verify that the IP address you select is appropriate for the network and will not be assigned to another device.
A static IP address works well as long as the CasaTunes Music Server remains connected to the network for which that address was configured.
However, network configurations can change. For example, the Music Server may be moved to another network, connected to a different router, or attached to a network using a different IP address range. In this situation, the configured static IP address may no longer be valid and the Music Server could become unreachable.

CasaTunes includes an automatic network recovery feature designed to prevent this situation.
If CasaTunes detects that the Music Server's statically configured IP address is no longer valid for the connected network, it begins a 15-minute grace period. This allows time for temporary network interruptions, router restarts, or other short-lived network conditions to resolve.
If the network remains incompatible with the configured static IP address after the grace period, CasaTunes automatically switches the Music Server back to DHCP. The network can then assign the Music Server a valid IP address, allowing it to become reachable again without requiring physical access to the server.
When CasaTunes automatically reverts to DHCP, your static IP configuration is preserved. The IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings you previously entered are not lost. Once the Music Server is connected to the appropriate network again, you can quickly restore the static IP configuration by simply selecting Static as the IP Address Mode again—there is no need to re-enter the network settings.
This automatic recovery provides the reliability of a static IP address for automation and control systems while reducing the risk of losing network access to the CasaTunes Music Server if the network configuration changes. By preserving the static IP settings during recovery, CasaTunes also makes it easy to return the server to its original network configuration when appropriate.
