Precautions

Care

Occasionally you should dust the unit all over with a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, use a soft cloth dampened with a weak solution of mild detergent and water. Dry the unit immediately afterwards with a clean cloth. Don’t use abrasive cloths, thinners, alcohol, or other chemical solvents, because they may damage the finish or remove the panel lettering.

Power

WARNING! BEFORE PLUGGING IN THE UNIT FOR THE FIRST TIME, READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION CAREFULLY.

AC outlet voltages vary from country to country. Make sure that the voltage in your area meets the voltage requirements printed on the unit’s power adapter. e.g. ~ 110V / 240V, 50/60HZ.

If you do not intend to use the unit for an extended period, remove the power cord from the AC outlet.

Never Touch This Unit with Wet Hands

Never handle this unit or its power cord while your hands are wet or damp. If water or any other liquid gets inside this unit, have it checked by your CasaTunes dealer

Speaker Shorts

Under no circumstances should the speaker output terminals of the unit be short circuited, grounded or connected to another output.

Features

Zones

The amplifier has four separate 30W @ 8 Ohms amplified zones.

Expansion

You can add additional CT-5X4MA and CT-12X8MA matrix amplifiers to expand the number of zones beyond 4.

Alternatively, the CT-5X4MA can also be used to add four zones to an existing CT-12X8MA matrix amplifier.

To share sources between units you can either configure your amplifiers in stack mode or distributed sources mode.

When configured in stack mode you must split the sources (using Y cables and optical cable splitters) so each source can be fed to both matrix amplifiers.

By default CasaTunes will disable the independent checkbox for each source.

COMING SOON: Information on how to share sources over IP using the amplifiers distributed sources capabilities.

Sources

The amplifier has five separate sources.

1 x local RCA source input

1 x Balanced RCA input (using the included BALTX2 adapter)

1 x Balanced Optical source input (using the included BALTX2 adapter)

The BALTX2 adapter allows the 2 connected sources to be located up to 300ft away from the amplifier.

2 x Configurable COAX digital input/output

You can adjust the gain on each source, up to +10dB in 2dB steps, allowing you to adjust and balance the volume level between all the sources

For each zone you can configure up to a 600ms delay for each source.

Room Settings

For each zone you can configure the maximum volume, power on volume, bass, treble, balance, loudness, gain, and mono or stereo settings.

4-band Equalizer

Each zone sports a 4-band equalizer. Use the amplifier web application (see below) to configure the equalizer settings for a zone.

Firmware Upgradeable

The amplifier may be updated in the field using the amplifier web application (see below).

Thermal Control

The amplifier automatically monitors the temperature and takes progressive action depending on the temperature.

When the temperature reaches:

  • 194°F (90°C) the amplifier volume is reduced 20dB
  • 212°F (100°C) the amplifiers are shut down until the temperature drops below 194°F (90°C)

Zone Linking

A zone may be linked to multiple zones. Zone linking ties the source selection together, and optionally the volume and standby. This is useful for closely coupled audio areas where it is advantageous to have different volume control but the same source, or the same volume with separate standby control. Zone linking is setup either via the front panel user interface or Web application

If you are using a CasaTunes Music Server, use Room Groups which behave similar to Zone Linking but offer even more flexibility

IP Control

The amplifier is controlled, monitored and programmed via Ethernet. We recommend using a CasaTunes CT-1, CT-2 or CT-3 music server to control the amplifier.

All CasaTunes music servers automatically discover all CT-5X4MA (and CT-12X8MA) matrix amplifiers in the network simplifying setup, and automatically manages IP address changes.

Keypads

Each amplifier supports up to 2 keypads. The keypads can be assigned to control any of the zones in the system.

IR Forwarding

Each keypad includes an IR receiver. For each installed keypad, you can configure whether the IR signal received on a keypad should be forwarded to the IR OUT emitter based on the currently source selected (1-5) for the zone (assigned to the keypad)

Power Failure Restoration

After an AC power outage the amplifier restores its settings to the pre-interrupted state. All internal settings are stored in non-volatile memory.

Backup and Restore. Reset to Factory Defaults

You can backup the amplifier's current configuration settings, and restore them at a later date, if needed.

In addition, you can reset the amplifier to the factory defaults, if needed.

Example System Configuration

Figure 1 - Typical System Configuration

Figure 1 illustrates a possible CasaTunes multi room system configuration where the amplifier is powering audio into three listening zones (Kitchen, Master Bedroom, and Office), and the fourth zone, the Living Room, is being powered by an AV Receiver fed by the pre-amplified output from S5 OUT (which is configured to output Zone 4).

The TV Audio output is being fed into the CT-5X4MA matrix amplifier as S3 (input source 3) using the BALTX2 adapter. The BALTX2 balanced audio adapter allows the source component, TV, to be located up to 300 ft away from the CT-5X4MA matrix amplifier.

Each zone can choose to listen to either the CasaTunes music server stream or the TV Audio. In this example, there are two unused input sources (S2 and S4) which can be connected to other music sources, such as additional CasaTunes music streams (using a CT-2 or CT-3), Amazon Echo Link, SONOS Port, etc.

Also shown In this example, is how the system is being controlled. You can use an Alexa enabled device and use your voice, you can use Android or iOS phones and/or tablets, and you can also use the optional CasaTunes KP2 keypads.

Multiple Amplifiers

In larger installations multiple amplifiers can be used together to increase the number of zones. You can add multiple CT-5X4MA amplifiers, or a combination of CT-12X8MA and CT-5X4MA matrix amplifiers, providing greater installation flexibility. For example, you might start with a single CT-5X4MA amplifier, and then decide later to add more rooms by adding another CT-5X4MA.

When using a CasaTunes music server with multiple CT-5X4MA and/or CT-12X8MA amplifiers, it is best to use audio-over-IP and distributed sources to virtually connect sources between amplifiers.

Both the CasaTunes CT-12X8MA and the CT-5X4MA matrix amplifiers support up to 16 distributed sources. Any input source, on any amplifier, can be configured as a distributed source. Distributed sources are shared (virtually connected) with all the other amplifiers via the network using a low latency audio-over-ip protocol.

When using a CasaTunes music server, you use CasaSetup, the CasaTunes administration tool, to configure how to connect the sources between multiple amplifiers, as shown below:

Selecting how to connect your sources in CasaSetup
Figure 2 - Selecting how to connect your sources in CasaSetup

To simplify setup in a multiple amplifier setup, CasaTunes implements a Master/Slave model.  The master amplifier is the primary amplifier that CasaTunes communicates with (and always includes Zone 1).  Slave amplifiers are any additional CT-12X8MA and CT-5X4MA amplifiers on the network.

If one of the matrix amplifiers you are installing is a CT-12X8MA, we recommend you configure this amplifier as your master amplifier. All sources on the master amplifier, that are not hidden, are automatically configured as distributed sources, and are available to all the other matrix amplifiers.

CasaTunes automatically configures any CT-12X8MA and CT-5X4MA matrix amplifiers when discovered on the network. Therefore, it is very important to add the master amplifier to the network first, before any additional amplifiers, otherwise the amplifier selected as the master will be unpredictable.

A major benefit of using audio-over-ip to share sources between amplifiers, is the amplifiers no longer need to be physically located next to each other, as long as they have access to the same network.

Configuring the CT-5X4MA using CasaSetup

If you are using a CasaTunes music server, you must configure the CT-5X4MA using CasaSetup, the CasaTunes Administration tool.

In the Controller Page in CasaSetup, select CasaTunes CT-5X4/CT-12X8 as the Controller Type. This driver is used to control both the CT-12X8MA and CT-5X4MA matrix amplifiers. To simplify setup, CasaTunes will automatically discover the IP address of your master matrix amplifier.

Learn about CasaSetup

In addition to CasaSetup, the CT-5X4MA has a built in Web application. In most cases, there is no need to use this built-in web application.

Using the Amplifier Web Application

If you are using a CasaTunes Music Server, then using the amplifier web application to setup one or more amplifiers, is not required. Instead use CasaSetup to configure your amplifiers, sources, and rooms.

The CasaTunes CT-5X4MA amplifier has a built-in web application which may be used for configuration, control and monitoring of amplifier functions.

The amplifier physical Zones 1- 4 are automatically assigned a range of System Zone numbers (typically 1-4). However, If this is not the first amplifier to be installed, then the System Zone numbers assigned will be the next available zone numbers. System Zone numbers should not overlap. There is an option to restore the default settings for an amplifier on the Management page.

You can assign the zone to be controlled by each Keypad Port. In addition, you can configure the IR Receiver on the keypads to be routed to the IR OUT emitter (based on the currently selected source for the zone)

Zone Linking: Not used when using a CasaTunes music server.

Zones can be linked together so that the source selection and optionally power and/or volume apply to all zones in the group. There is no limit to the number of zones in a group, but a zone may only be a member of a single group

IR Routing Configuration Page

You can configure whether the IR received via a keypad port is to be routed to the IR OUT emitter based on the currently selected source for the zone.

IR input selects the keypad port to configure for IR routing.

Selected IR Outputs is a table of check boxes that when checked transmits source related IR to the IR OUT emitter.

When using a CasaTunes music server with multiple CT-12X8MA and/or CT-5X4MA amplifiers you use audio-over-IP and distributed sources to virtually connect sources between amplifiers.

The AC fuse inside the unit is not user-serviceable. If you cannot turn on the unit, contact the dealer from whom you purchased this unit.

  1. If you need to transport this unit, use the original packaging
  2. Do not leave rubber or plastic items on this unit for a long time; they may leave marks on the case.
  3. This unit’s top and rear panels may get warm after prolonged use. This is normal.
