CasaTunes supports the following music file formats:
WAV Files, WMA Files, WMV Files, WM Files, ASF Files, WAX Files, WPL Files, “Streaming” (.NET), ASX Files, M3U Files, PLS Files, MPG Files, MPEG Files, MPA Files, MP2 Files, MP3 Files, MP4 Files, M4A Files, AAC Files, Vorbis OGG Files, Vorbis OGA Files, AC3 Files, AAIF Files, AIF Files, AIFC Files, FLAC Files, “Monkey’s Audio Files” (.APE), MusePack MPC Files, MusePack MP+ Files, MusePack MPP Files, “OptimFrog Files” (.OFR),  “Speex Files” (.SPX), “True Audio Files” (.TTA),  “WavPack Files” (.WV).

If you are using iTunes as your player (CasaTunes can play music from iTunes libraries and Windows Media Player libraries), the music cannot be DRM protected, so it must be iTunes Plus music or music ripped from CDs or other sources. DRM music in the Windows Media Player library is ok.

[edit 10/12/09]For CasaTunes to play these formats they must show up in either the Windows Media Player library or the Apple iTunes library. Some types of music may require special codecs or other software to show up in the Windows Media Player or iTunes. Due to the changing nature of file formats, CasaTunes cannot guarantee that all features will work with all file formats. For best compatibility, we suggest using formats native to Windows Media Player or iTunes[end of edit].

Apple requests us to state (and we agree!):
“Content purchased from the iTunes Store is for personal lawful use only.
Don’t steal music.”

Please tell me what software or codecs should I install on my computer to be able to controll flac files. I can only play the flac files from Media player 11 library but i cannot see the remaining time and also cannot skip ffwdor bcwd inside the track when is played.

OS: Vista Home Premium, with the latest updates installed.

Thank you,
Bogdan

Bogdan,
After some research I see that the problem you are describing is a common complaint for FLAC using Windows Media Player. We are seeing the same problem (as you reported) with the player engine we are using. We are continuing to investigate this.

Bogdan,
Unfortunately, we have not been able to resolve this problem. As you stated, the music will play in CasaTunes, but you cannot see the length of the song, nor can you reposition within the song. We will continue to monitor the work of some developers that are trying to get this to function properly in Windows Media Player and iTunes, but I am afraid that we will not have a quick resolution to this problem.
The only recommendation I can make at this time is to convert your files to lossless WMA or lossless Apple formats. The advantage of using these formats is that they are more widely supported (especially lossless WMA) and they are lossless, like FLAC, so that you do not lose any of the original audio content. The disadvantage is that it may be a lot of work if you have a lot of songs in FLAC format.
By the way, which codecs/filters are you using to allow the songs to be installed in the Windows Media Player library? Are you seeing the same problem if you play the music in Windows Media Player?

Hello Kim, thank you for your advices.
I can tell you monday more about what you have asked me.
The server is at the office and i don’t remember exactly how flac is working in wmp.

I will use WMA to be the default option for cd ripping in the audio server.

Have a nice weekend!
Bogdan.

Thank you, Bogdan.
If you want to make sure that the ripped output is as good as the original CD, I would change the ripping selection to Windows Media Lossless. The default is good for portable devices, but with high quality speakers you may hear a difference by going to lossless, just like using FLAC.
There is another factor, too. If you use the default settings in Windows Media Player and then transfer the files to another format later, like MP3, when they are conerted there is a good chance the quality will go down a little more. Each time a format is converted, if it is not from lossless to lossless, the quality suffers a little more.
