XLi and XLe mono output?

I’m planning on running a 12 zone distributed audio system with at least 2 speakers in each zone, but I’m hoping to only require a single 12 channel amplifier.

Is it possible to use an XLe with a single 12 channel amp and use an impedance matching speaker selector on each amp output channel to go to multiple speakers?  Basically, can the XLe be configured to output mono (combined L+R) on each zone output?

Thanks!

We have several customers that have done exactly what you wish to do. You will need stereo to mono adapter cables to go from the output of each XLe “zone” to the input of each amplifier “channel”. The adapter cables simply connect the outputs together. Since they are high impedance, tying the left channel output of the XLe directly to the right channel works fine.
The zone 1-6 trigger output must also be tied to the zone 7-12 trigger output and go to the trigger in on the amp, so that any zone output will turn on the amp. I just reviewed the schematic for the XLe and technically don’t see any risk doing this, but if you wish to wait until Monday we can verify that this works ok in the lab. The other customers use this arrangement in a facitility where the amps are always running and don’t use the trigger in on the amps, so we have never tested tying to trigger outputs together.
If you use our amplifier you can go down to 4 ohms, although I would not recommend it for all outputs, especially if they are all driven at the same time.

Wow you guys are quick.  Thanks a lot for the very timely and complete response.  Greatly appreciated.
